Oil and Gas Facility Security: The 3am Problem, Solved

A flow station sits behind a fence, a guard post and a camera network. At 3am, someone still walks in through a blind spot nobody had mapped.

That scenario repeats across Nigerian sites every week. Oil and gas facility security rarely fails because nothing was watching. Instead, it fails because what was watching could not see everywhere at once.

Why fixed security misses so much

Perimeter cameras deliver fixed angles. Consequently, they see what they were aimed at and nothing beyond it.

Guards cover ground on foot, but a large tank farm takes time to walk. During each round, most of the site sits unobserved. Meanwhile, anyone studying the pattern learns exactly how long that window lasts.

Vegetation grows over sightlines. Cameras fail quietly. Lighting drops off at the fence line, and thermal contrast disappears with it.

None of these are staffing failures. Rather, they are coverage failures.

What automated aerial coverage adds

A drone changes the geometry of the problem, because it looks down instead of across.

From above, a whole facility appears in one frame. Tank tops, bund walls, pipe racks, loading bays and the outer perimeter all fall into view. Blind spots stop existing, since there is nothing for a fence line to hide.

However, a crewed drone only helps while a crew is on site. Overnight, the gap returns.

For continuous facility coverage, the strongest fit in the DJI Enterprise range is DJI Dock 3 paired with the Matrice 4TD.

Dock 3 is a weatherproof enclosure that houses, charges and launches the aircraft with no pilot present. Missions run on schedule, or they trigger automatically from an alarm. Afterwards, the aircraft returns, recharges and stands ready.

Several specifications matter for Nigerian sites. The dock carries an IP56 rating, while the aircraft holds IP55 protection. Operating range covers -30°C to 50°C, so heat and harmattan dust do not ground it. Take-off happens in roughly ten seconds, and transmission reaches up to 25 kilometres.

Through FlightHub 2, automated routes detect vehicles, vessels and infrared temperature anomalies without anyone watching a live feed. In addition, change detection compares each flight against the last, flagging new construction, encroachment or activity.

The Matrice 4TD carries thermal and wide-angle sensors built for night work. That matters most, because incidents cluster after dark.

Fixed or mobile, depending on the site

Permanent installations suit terminals, refineries and flow stations. Vehicle-mounted deployment, new to this generation, lets the same system relocate as needs shift.
