Border Surveillance in Nigeria: Persistent Aerial ISR

A border is a line on a map and a problem on the ground. It runs through bush, river, farmland and hill country, and no force is large enough to stand on all of it at once.

So coverage becomes a question of allocation. Border surveillance in Nigeria works by deciding where to look, which means accepting that most of the line is unwatched most of the time.

The arithmetic of patrol coverage

Ground patrols hold a position or they move. They cannot do both.

A vehicle patrol covers distance but sees narrowly. A static observation post sees well but covers little. Meanwhile, anyone studying either pattern learns its rhythm within days.

Terrain compounds the problem. Difficult ground slows patrols, blocks line of sight and favours anyone who knows it better than you do. Consequently, the areas hardest to patrol are precisely the areas most used.

What aerial ISR changes

An aircraft sees across terrain rather than through it.

From altitude, a single sensor covers ground that would occupy several patrols. Movement across open country becomes visible. Tracks, vehicles, crossings and gatherings all register against a landscape that otherwise reveals nothing.

Thermal imaging extends that into darkness. Most illicit movement happens at night precisely because darkness has historically defeated observation. Therefore a thermal sensor removes the advantage rather than matching it.

Repetition adds the final layer. Fly the same route daily and change detection flags what is new, which is almost always what matters.

Best-fit DJI platform: Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse H30T

For wide-area surveillance, the strongest fit in the DJI Enterprise range is the Matrice 350 RTK paired with the Zenmuse H30T.

The H30T combines a 34x optical zoom, thermal imaging, a laser rangefinder and an NIR auxiliary light in one gimbal. That matters for ISR work. Zoom identifies activity at distance without closing on it, thermal detects presence after dark, and laser ranging records exact position for reporting.

The airframe suits sustained operations. It holds position in wind, continues through rain, and delivers endurance measured against mission requirements rather than demonstration conditions.

Distance and persistence

Long borders need range. The Matrice 400 extends coverage considerably in a single flight, which reduces launch points and logistics along a dispersed line.

Fixed sites need persistence instead. DJI Dock 3 with the Matrice 4TD flies automated patrols on a schedule, day and night, from an unmanned position. For forward operating bases, installations and critical infrastructure perimeters, that removes the crew requirement entirely.

Rapid response suits the Matrice 4T, which deploys in minutes from a vehicle.

What commands and agencies receive

Under our Drone as a Service model, ARCO Worldwide delivers:

  • Persistent wide-area monitoring across land, riverine and border domains
  • Thermal detection of night movement and activity
  • Perimeter surveillance for installations and forward positions
  • Change-detection reporting against previous flights
  • Live video feed to command during active operations
  • Terrain mapping and route analysis for planning
  • Encrypted transmission and audit-ready records

Commanders receive decision-grade information. We manage the aviation.

Why BVLOS capability decides the question

A border cannot be monitored within visual line of sight. The requirement is structural, not preferential.

Flying beyond visual range legally requires authorisation, documented procedure and qualified crews. Any provider unable to demonstrate all three is offering a demonstration rather than a capability.

ARCO Worldwide is Nigeria’s first licensed commercial drone operator, authorised by the NCAA and approved by the Office of the National Security Adviser. Our BVLOS-capable surveillance operations run under ISO 9001:2015 certified processes, and our crews train through ARCO Aviation Academy.

With more than 15,000 flight hours, over 70 pilots and crew, and bases in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, we mobilise nationwide at short notice.

Coverage without the gaps

Every security review of an incident finds the same thing. Something moved through a space nobody was watching at the time.

Persistent aerial surveillance narrows that space. It watches ground no patrol can hold, through darkness that defeats observation, on a cycle that does not tire.
